Government announces setting up of helpdesks in all districts of the country to combat trafficking and ensure safety for women, using the Nirbhaya Fund. The centers will be started at police stations, as helpdesks for women.
The women help desks, would be gender-sensitive desks that will be aimed at grievance redressal of women through the policing system and for improved community interaction of the police with a focus on crime against women and children.
The help desks also aim to create a conducive atmosphere for distressed women and girls to approach the police stations without any hesitation and fear.
The Nirbhaya Fund was announced by the Centre in 2013 after the sensational December 16, 2012 gang rape and murder case in Delhi. Its aim was to support the initiatives of the government and the NGOs working towards the safety of women.
The States and Union Territories have utilized less than 20% of the budget allocated to them under the Nirbhaya Fund for safety of women by the Central government between 2015 and 2018, according to official data; though the fund is non-lapsable and is a corpus for women safety projects.
